Vol. 531 No. 2

Written Answers. - Litter Pollution.

John Gormley

Question:

25 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government his views on whether his petition seeking the overturn of a litter fine has undermined his authority as Minister for the Environment and Local Government; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5120/01]

As I stated publicly, the matter referred to by the Deputy was processed through my constituency office while I was on leave in August 1998. I was not aware that a petition was forwarded to the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform in my name. My authority as Minister for the Environment and Local Government has not been undermined by this episode.

Last week, I launched, with Minister of State, Deputy Wallace, a litter action plan as the Government's response to the report of the national anti-litter forum. Copies of both documents are in the Oireachtas Library and were circulated to every Member of the House. It is a comprehensive programme setting out a range of anti-litter actions which we will vigorously pursue. With partnership and support from relevant sectors and individual citizens it can be the cornerstone of a successful effort to eradicate litter pollution.
