Vol. 531 No. 3

Written Answers. - International Year of the Volunteer.

Question:

81 Dr. Upton asked the Taoiseach if he will take a day's leave to carry out voluntary work in recognition of this year as the International Year of the Volunteer; if he will allow all staff in his Department to take a day off on a similar basis; the steps he will take to pay tribute to the International Year of the Volunteer; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5335/01]

It is very fitting that the United Nations has designated the year 2001 as International Year of the Volunteer. It is important that the work of volunteers all over the world should be given recognition.

For my part a substantial amount of my time, outside of normal working hours, is concerned with encouraging and supporting local voluntary organisations.
