Vol. 531 No. 4

Written Answers. - Sheltered Housing Scheme.

Jack Wall

Question:

150 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will support the concept of sheltered housing on land owned by his Department, where such land is available within urban boundaries, and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6225/01]

As the Minister with responsibility for older people, I recognise that provision of sheltered housing plays an important role in allowing such people to live in the community for as long as possible. I appreciate the considerable funding made available by the Department of the Environment and Local Government for this purpose. I understand that the initiative for a sheltered housing scheme generally comes from a voluntary organisation and sites for such schemes are sometimes made available, at little or no charge, by health boards, local authorities and religious orders. If the Deputy has a specific case in mind, I would be glad if he could let me have the details and I will make appropriate inquiries.
