Vol. 531 No. 4

Written Answers. - Hospital Admissions.

Dan Neville

Question:

72 Mr. Neville asked the Minister for Health and Children the number of patients readmitted to hospital within one week of discharge. [5895/01]

In 1999, 24,590 patients were readmitted to hospital within one week of discharge. This figure is derived from HIPE – hospital in-patient enquiry – data which gives details of activity in publicly funded acute general hospitals in the State. HIPE data are able to record only re-admissions to the same hospital as it is not possible to trace patients from hospital to hospital. The above figure includes all re-admissions, namely re-admissions for the same condition or an unrelated condition.

Question No. 73 answered with Question No. 30.
