Vol. 531 No. 5

Written Answers. - Road Traffic Accidents.

Ivor Callely

Question:

98 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of serious and fatal accidents which occurred in 2000; the number of drivers involved in such accidents who were holders of provisional licences; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6107/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that detailed statistics in relation to the number of fatal and serious injury accidents on Irish roads are provided by the National Roads Authority, St Martins House, Waterloo Road, Dublin 4. The most recent report is in respect of 1999.

I am further informed by the Garda authorities that the provisional figure for fatal accidents for the year 2000 is 362, in which there were 415 fatalities, the 1999 equivalent figure is 374 fatal accidents, with 413 fatalities.

I am also informed that figures for the number of serious injury accidents and details of drivers involved in such accidents for the year 2000, who were holders of provisional licences, are not readily available.

Question No. 99 answered with Question No. 39.
