Vol. 531 No. 5

Written Answers. - Immigration Controls.

Alan Shatter

Question:

104 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will take steps to establish a body, similar to complaints and monitoring bodies already in place for the Garda and the Refugee Legal Service, to receive complaints and ensure independent monitoring of the operation of immigration controls. [6277/01]

Immigration officers, as members of the Garda Síochána, are subject to the provisions of the Garda Síochána (Complaints) Act, 1986. Accordingly, any member of the public who is directly affected by, or who witnesses, any conduct of an immigration officer may have a complaint concerning that conduct considered by the Garda Síochána Complaints Board in the normal way. I have no plans to introduce additional complaints or monitoring bodies in this field.

Question No. 105 answered with Question No. 52.
