Vol. 531 No. 5

Written Answers. - Prisoner Releases.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

16 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he has received the report (details supplied) into the review of the circumstances of the release of a prisoner from County Roscommon who was subsequently convicted of the murder of a woman while on day release; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6139/01]

I am informed that the review being undertaken by Mr. John Olden is continuing but that he is not yet in a position to say precisely when it will be completed. Given the seriousness of the matter I believe Mr. Olden should be given adequate time to examine all aspects of the case. As I have said before in this House, I propose to make the results of the review available to the House and to the family of the victim. I will give careful consideration to any recommendations which may emerge from the review. I do not believe that it would be appropriate for me to comment further on the case until the results of Mr. Olden's review are available.
