Vol. 531 No. 5

Written Answers. - Fireworks Policy.

Ivor Callely

Question:

32 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the amount of fireworks authorised to be imported over the past five years; if any injury or difficulties arose from such fireworks displays; the measures that would be necessary to amend policy; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6063/01]

My Department authorised the importation of approximately 100 tonnes of fireworks during the five years ended 28 February 2001. Only one incident, in which a spectator was injured, was brought to the attention of my Department during that period. As I indicated in the Dáil on 25 October 2000 during an adjournment debate on fireworks, my Department is currently carrying out a review of the legislation relating to explosives. The issues relating to fireworks will be addressed in the review.
