Vol. 532 No. 1

Written Answers. - Designated Areas.

Michael Ring

Question:

272 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands if Inishower, Newport, County Mayo, is fully recognised as an island. [6429/01]

While there have been exceptions, in general, only islands satisfying each of the follow ing criteria are normally considered for the purpose of assistance from the islands division of my Department: islands lacking a bridge connecting them to the mainland; islands cut off from the mainland daily by the tide; islands which are currently permanently inhabited; and islands which are not in private ownership.

It is understood that Inishower is connected by a bridge to the mainland and therefore does not satisfy the above criteria.
