Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Michael D'Arcy

Question:

345 Mr. D'Arcy asked the Minister for Education and Science when the extension will be carried out on Bridgetown vocational college, Wexford, which was initially granted in 1992. [6432/01]

An extension of 1,772 square metres is being planned at Bridgetown vocational college to cater for a long-term projected enrolment of 650 pupils. This project is progressing through architectural planning.

The present position is that in January 2001 the building unit of my Department wrote to the County Wexford Vocational Education Committee authorising it to instruct its design team to proceed to the detailed design stage of my Department's design team procedures subject to a number of technical requirements being addressed.

Question:

346 Mr. D'Arcy asked the Minister for Education and Science when the extensions will be carried out on Craanford national school, Gorey, County Wexford, which was approved in 2000. [6433/01]

Architectural planning for the project in question is proceeding as quickly as possible having regard to the large number of school building projects on hand within my Department.

It is not possible to say at this point when construction will commence. However, the school authorities will be kept informed of developments.

Brendan Howlin

Question:

361 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the fact that students and teachers in St. Margaret's national school, Curracloe, County Wexford are forced to work in overcrowded, dilapidated pre-fabricated buildings while they await the building of an extension at the school; when construction on the extension will commence; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6546/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 347 and 361 together.

Architectural planning for improved accommodation at St. Margaret's national school, Curracloe, County Wexford is proceeding as quickly as possible having regard to the large number of school building projects on hand within my Department.

It is not possible to say at this point when construction will commence as the rate of progress to construction of a major project such as this depends on factors such as the complexity and size of the project; the time required to undertake architectural planning; the volume of other projects being dealt with by the design team and my Department's building unit; the period of time required for the granting of planning permission and obtaining a tire certificate; the availability of funding; the outcome of the tender competition and the procurement where relevant of bonds, insurance and tax clearance by prospective contractors.

The school authorities will be kept informed of developments.
