Vol. 532 No. 1

Written Answers. - Army Pensions.

Willie Penrose

Question:

102 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Defence if, in view of the recent report on pensions, he will now take up with the Government the payment of the military service allowance to Army pensioners who retired before 1 August 1990; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6531/01]

I refer the Deputy to my reply to Questions Nos. 28 and 91 on 14 February 2001 on this matter. As I indicated then, the Commission on Public Service Pensions specifically addressed the issue of the pensionability of allowances, including the military service allowance, and the consequences for pensioners generally in chapter 22, section 6 of its final report. The commission did not recommend any increase for pensioners in this context. The Government intends to make formal decisions on the commission's recommendations once it has had an opportunity to consider the report in detail.
