Vol. 532 No. 1

Written Answers. - Rural Environment Protection Scheme.

Ulick Burke

Question:

127 Mr. U. Burke asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the number of applications under REP scheme II that have been received and or approved in each district of the farm development service; his views on the poor uptake of the scheme to the end of February 2001; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6878/01]

The information requested, as at 26 February 2001, is attached in tabular form. It is understood that a significant number of applications are close to completion by planners. The new REP scheme was launched on 27 November 2000. My Department then began a nationwide series of information meetings for planners to brief them on the new scheme and these meetings were completed by mid-December. A one-day briefing meeting for national and local officers of the farming organisations, covering both REPS and the new early retirement scheme, also took place in mid-December. A nationwide series of information meetings for farmers began in February 2001 but it has been necessary to suspend these meetings as part of my Department's precautions against foot and mouth disease.
