Vol. 532 No. 2

Written Answers. - School Accommodation.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

244 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of schools at primary and secondary level which do not have classroom and teacher accommodation in accordance with modern standards, practices and requirements; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7217/01]

While my Department has detailed information on a substantial number of individual schools, it does not have a comprehensive, readily accessible database of information in the format requested by the Deputy.

Arrangements are being made to conduct a survey of accommodation to determine more accurately the level of need among schools. It is envisaged that the survey will be commenced on a pilot basis in the first instance.

My Department is currently drawing up the tender documentation for the inventory. While the exact time-scale for the completion of the inventory will not be known until tenders have been assessed and a contract awarded, it is likely to take a considerable period to complete because of the number of school buildings involved and the detailed nature of the information to be placed on the database.
