Vol. 532 No. 2

Written Answers. - Third Level Institutions.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

29 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will give details of the ongoing discussions between his Department and the Department of Finance arising from the Government decision of April 1997 to establish a third level campus in Skibbereen, County Cork; and the proposals he has for the planning phase of the project submitted by the Cork Institute of Technology in June 1997. [6769/01]

As I indicated to the Deputy in response to a parliamentary question on 1 February last, the position in relation to Skibbereen is being examined in the context of my plans to strengthen the education base in regions which are not well served at present and to establish effective links with higher and third level institutions. My Department is engaged in ongoing discussions with the Department of Finance in relation to the availability of staff to progress my proposals at the local level.
