Vol. 533 No. 2

Ceisteanna–Questions. Priority Questions. - Other Questions.

I remind Deputies about the strict time limits.

On a point of order, a Cheann Comhairle, I refer to your ruling questions out of order. Five of my questions dealing with Iraq were ruled out of order in anticipation of statements on the matter following Question Time. If statements on matters of foreign policy are to be confined to ten minutes for spokespersons, it seems unreasonable to disqualify five questions on the basis—

That is in accordance with long-standing precedent regarding questions that anticipate a debate.

I accept that.

One of the Deputy's questions has been allowed because it is purely statistical. Supplementary questions must also be statistical.

I accept that, but where statements follow Question Time I will in future oppose, through the Whips, their confinement to ten minutes.

I take the Deputy's point, but this is not the right time or place to make it. He should take up the matter with the Whips.

Has Question No. 8 been allowed?

Yes, because it is purely statistical. A number of questions relating to Iraq were ruled out of the order because of their anticipatory nature. However, statistical questions seeking information which helps a Deputy to make his or her point in a debate are allowed.

The problem is that we do not receive the replies until 5.30 p.m.

If the Deputy allows the Chair to proceed, she will receive the reply to the next question.
