Michael D. Higgins

Question:

44 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if the Task Force on Policy Regarding Emigrants, which was promised in the Programme for Prosperity and Fairness has been established; if so, when it is likely to report; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8419/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 29 and 44 together.

In the Programme for Prosperity and Fairness the Government is committed to establishing a task force to develop a coherent long-term approach to our emigrants and their needs. I am currently in the process of selecting members of the task force and setting terms of reference, including a date by which it will be asked to report to me. Specific proposals will be put to the Government in the coming weeks.

The remit of the task force will not be confined to emigrants in Britain.
