Vol. 533 No. 3

Written Answers. - Driving Licences.

Michael Noonan

Question:

127 Mr. Noonan asked the Minister for Defence if he will provide a report on the case of a person (details supplied) in County Limerick who is experiencing difficulties getting his military driving licence transferred to a civilian B driving licence; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9091/01]

The regulations governing the issue of driving licences are made by the Minister for the Environment and Local Government. Defence Forces personnel who fulfil the required conditions as prescribed under the relevant provisions of the Road Traffic (Licensing of Drivers) Regulations, may be exempted from undertaking the Department of the Environment and Local Government driving test. Where such personnel fulfil the required criteria, the military authorities may issue certificates of competency which exempt the holder from undertaking the Department of the Environment and Local Government driving test.

The military authorities advise that the individual concerned has not been tested to drive an adapted vehicle, as there is no such vehicle in the Defence Forces. Under statute, the director transport corps cannot issue a certificate of competency which would enable the individual to obtain a licence for that class of vehicle.
