Vol. 533 No. 3

Written Answers. - BSE Compensation Costs.

Question:

148 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the cost to the State for each case of BSE detected; if he will break down the cost for each case under each of the headings: compensation to farmers, cost of slaughter, cost of disposal, veterinary costs, administration costs and cash flow problems arising from each BSE case. [8907/01]

The information is not readily available in the format requested by the Deputy. However, compensation at current market value is paid in respect of herds that are destroyed under the arrangements in place to deal with BSE. The cost of compensation to farmers from 1990 to 2000 was £48.5 million. This includes the compensation for depopulated herds, birth cohort/progeny animals and UK imported animals. In addition, expenditure of approximately £10.7 million has been incurred on BSE associated costs including haulage, factory slaughter, rendering and disposal. To date, £23.9 million has been recouped from the EU under Ireland's BSE eradication plan.
