Vol. 533 No. 3

Written Answers. - Tourism Revenue.

Billy Timmins

Question:

300 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the most recent available breakdown by county of overseas visitors; the income received; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9084/01]

Final tourism figures for the year 2000 are not available as yet. I understand the Central Statistics Office plans to publish results for the fourth quarter of the year on Friday, 30 March 2001 with figures for the full year available shortly after that.

Preliminary indications suggest that the number of overseas visitors to Ireland last year increased by more than 4% to 6.2 million. The revenue figures published by the Central Statistics Office for the first nine months of last year show a 21% increase in foreign exchange earnings including a 17% increase in overseas visitor spend.
The following table sets out Bord Fáilte estimates of overseas visitor numbers and revenue by county for the year 1999.
