Vol. 533 No. 3

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Michael Ring

Question:

331 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education and Science the present position with regard to Newport secondary school, County Mayo; the meetings that have taken place in this regard; when he expects the construction stage to commence; and when the school will be operational. [8883/01]

A number of meetings have taken place between my Department's planning and building unit and representatives of County Mayo Vocational Education Committee within the past 18 months with regard to the proposed development of a post-primary school in Newport, County Mayo. A clearly defined catchment area for the school has yet to be determined. On receipt of proposals in this regard from the VEC, a detailed assessment will be carried out by my Department to determine the impact of enrolments at the new school on existing post-primary schools in the area.

With regard to the construction of the new school, on 22 February 2001, County Mayo Vocational Education Committee was instructed to commence preparation of stages 4 and 5 – detailed design and bills of quantities. Upon receipt of this documentation, consideration will be given to the further progression of this building project through to tender and construction.

It is not possible to state at this time when construction will commence or when the school will be operational.
