Vol. 533 No. 4

Written Answers. - Foot and Mouth Disease.

Willie Penrose

Question:

60 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Defence the safety or precautionary steps which have been taken in regard to Department of Defence lands arising from the foot and mouth scare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8998/01]

My Department has sought to adhere to the guidelines laid down by the Department of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development. Access at all Defence Force installations has been restricted to a single entry point and disinfectant measures have been put in place. In addition, the use of facilities in barracks by sports and community groups has been curtailed until further notice. Military tactical training exercises have also been suspended. With regard to the larger training areas, such as the Curragh, Kilworth and the Glen of Imaal, the advice of the local district veterinary offices has been obtained and appropriate steps taken to implement their recommendations.
