Vol. 533 No. 5

Written Answers. - Departmental Appointments.

Jan O'Sullivan

Question:

61 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the number of persons appointed since July 1997 to boards, working groups, committees and any other body comprising nominees from outside organisations which are under the aegis of this Department; the number of such appointments who were women; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9287/01]

From 1 July 1997 to date a total of 121 appointments, including re-appointments, have been made to State bodies under the aegis of my Department. I made 80 of the appointments, including 22 women appointees. The remaining 41 appointments were industry nominations, of which seven were women.

A number of working groups and committees have been established since 1 July 1997. A total of 176 persons have been appointed to these, of which 39 were women.

To ensure balance and effectiveness, appoint ments were made having regard to gender, sectoral and geographic balance and technical expertise.
