Vol. 533 No. 6

Written Answers. - Departmental Properties.

Brendan Smith

Question:

153 Mr. B. Smith asked the Minister for Defence if he will make available the short-fall in the amount promised to the people of Castleblayney following on the sale of the Castleblayney Army barracks site to the North Eastern Health Board. [9497/01]

As the Deputy has indicated, the North Eastern Health Board has agreed to purchase the former military barracks and to establish a project which will provide for 45 permanent appointments and that a further sum in excess of £1 million will be invested in the provision of the necessary facilities. These facilities, which will include a swimming pool, will be made available for public use when not required for child care purposes.

These investments by the State clearly demonstrates its commitment to the Castleblaney area and I am confident that when the project is complete it will be a welcome boost to the local community both financially and recreationally.

Jack Wall

Question:

154 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Defence if he will give consideration to the provision of land to an organisation (details supplied) in County Kildare which urgently needs such land for the provision of facilities for their members; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9684/01]

As the Deputy is aware, Naas barracks is being disposed of jointly to Naas UDC and Kildare County Council. The former Magee barracks is currently being used to accommodate asylum seekers and for the provision of a temporary halting site for travellers. In view of these needs, it has not been possible to arrange for the disposal of the property. However, the matter is being kept under review.

The question of making a contribution to the many local interests will be examined when the property becomes available for disposal.
