Vol. 533 No. 6

Written Answers. - Housing Aid for the Elderly.

Olivia Mitchell

Question:

299 Ms O. Mitchell asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will increase the housing aid for the elderly grant in view of increased costs in the construction industry. [9461/01]

The special housing aid for the elderly scheme, administered by a task force under the aegis of my Department and operated by the health boards, was established to provide assistance to improve the housing conditions of elderly persons living alone in unfit or insanitary conditions. In recognition of the valuable work being done, funding for the scheme has been increased significantly in recent years from £6 million in 1999 to £8 million last year and to £8.65 million for 2001. This will enable health boards to continue a high level of activity under the scheme.
