Vol. 533 No. 6

Written Answers. - Abolition of UK Betting Tax.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

80 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Finance his views on the abolition of betting tax in the United Kingdom; the effect that this will have on the outflow of funds from here to the United Kingdom; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9339/01]

The recent announcement in the UK budget of the abolition of betting tax did not come as a surprise given that there had been much speculation prior to the UK budget that this would happen. The new regime does not come into effect until next year, at the earliest. It is too early to predict what effect, if any, the new UK regime for betting tax will have on betting receipts here. Our provisional betting receipts for January and February 2001 are up by 19% on the receipts for the same period in 2000.
