Written Answers. - Orthodontic Service.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

170 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Health and Children the number of patients who received orthodontic treatment in each of the past ten years and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10238/01]

The provision of orthodontic services is the responsibility of the health boards in the first instance. The chief executive officers of the Eastern Regional Health Authority, the Midland Health Board, the Mid-Western Health Board and the South Eastern Health Board have advised me that the number of patients who received orthodontic treatment in each of the past ten years is not available. However, the following information was provided to me on the 30th of March:

Eastern Regional Health Authority: There are 2,800 patients currently receiving treatment through the regional orthodontic service.

Midland Health Board: I am advised that a total of 2,699 patients were treated in the last ten years.

Mid-Western Health Board: The number of patients treated for each of the years 1998 to 2000 is as follows:

1998

1999

It has not been possible to obtain the required information from the following health boards in the time available: The North Eastern Health Board, the North Western Health Board, the Southern Health Board and the Western Health Board. I will write to the Deputy in this regard with the information from the boards.
