Question:

192 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands if the work for a gaeltacht road (details supplied) in County Mayo was put out to tender; if so, the way in which the tenders were advertised; the number of tenders which were received; the relevant prices of each; the person or company awarded the successful tender; and when sanction was given for the work to proceed. [10229/01]

My Department has, in recent years, adopted a new approach in relation to the funding of the improvement of bog roads under scéim na mbóithre áise, the accommodation roads scheme. Under the revised approach, funding is normally provided for a local co-operative or local committee to carry out the works, either by way of a FÁS community employment scheme or, alternatively, by the employment of a registered contractor. It is a matter for the local co-operative or committee in question to obtain tenders, if necessary, and comply with all the other conditions of the scheme, including carrying out the work.
In relation to the bog road referred to by the Deputy, my Department is currently evaluating an application for funding under the scheme which was received from Muintir an Chorráin for the improvement of this road. My Department was advised that only one registered contractor was available in the area to submit a tender. A decision on the application will be made in the near future.
