Driving licence regulations provide that a certificate of competency, or in practice, the passing of a driving test under my Department's auspices, shall not be required in the case of Defence Forces personnel or ex-personnel who have held an armed forces driving permit for the relevant vehicle category and whose application for a civilian driving licence is accompanied by a certificate from the appropriate military authorities that the applicant is competent to drive vehicles of that category.
It appears from the details supplied that, in the present case, the applicant for the relevant civilian driving licence does not hold any comparable certificate from the military authorities. This case will be further examined by my Department, with the other authorities concerned, with a view to some resolution, if such is possible.
