182 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will verify an announcement made several months ago that smoke alarms would be available to old age pensioners free of charge; if this scheme has been introduced; if smoke alarms have been given to pensioners; and if so, the reason some pensioners have been excluded from the scheme. Officials of my Department are examining the question of how such a scheme might be introduced. Initial findings indicate that there are a number of very complex legal and other issues which require to be examined in detail before any conclusions can be reached.
