Vol. 534 No. 3

Written Answers. - College Status.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

320 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education and Science the proposals he has to grant Waterford Institute of Technology a status similar to that of Dublin Institute of Technology; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10721/01]

At present there are no proposals to afford Waterford Institute of Technology a status similar to that of Dublin Institute of Technology.

With regard to the making of higher education and training awards, the Deputy will be aware that the provisions of section 29(8) of the Qualifications (Education and Training) Act, 1999, will enable me, as Minister, to give effect to the recommendations of the independent review group, chaired by Professor Dervilla Donnelly, on Waterford Institute of Technology. When the relevant sections of the Act are brought into operation it is my intention to direct the Higher Education and Training Awards Council and the National Qualifications Authority of Ireland to implement the recommendations of the review group.
