Question:

101 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Defence his views on the public image of the Irish Red Cross Society; if he has satisfied himself with the way in which the organisation presents itself to the public; if he has further satisfied himself that the society is fulfilling its functions as a member of the International Red Cross; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10416/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 99 and 101 together.

I am aware that the Irish Red Cross Society performs an important statutory function in the dissemination of information on humanitarian law, the Geneva Convention and its additional protocols, to which Ireland is a signatory. I am in no doubt that these functions are carried out in an efficient and effective manner by the society, including its functions as a member of the International Red Cross.

As I pointed out previously, the Irish Red Cross Society is an autonomous body, run by the central council through its executive committee and I do not get involved in the day to day running of its affairs.
