Vol. 535 No. 1

Written Answers - Medicinal Products.

Brendan Howlin

Question:

59 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation if he has yet received any response from the Irish Sports Council to his request that it consider the position of a substance (details supplied) in view of new concerns with regard to its impact on the health of users; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11981/01]

Having considered the position of the substance named by the Deputy, the Irish Sports Council issued a press release on 14 March 2001, stating that they do not support its use in sport, and have issued a recommendation to athletes and players not to use the product. The sports council's recommendation is based on evidence of a number of short-term side effects associated with it, including muscle and gastrointestinal dysfunction and dehydration.

In response also to my request, the council is monitoring and keeping up to date with world-wide research on this substance.
