Vol. 535 No. 1

Written Answers - Driving Tests.

Michael Creed

Question:

377 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the arrangements which have been put in place to take account of people with learning disabilities for sitting a theory test for a driving licence and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12625/01]

John Ellis

Question:

418 Mr. Ellis asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will make special provision for people with learning difficulties sitting the new theory examination before sitting their driving test. [11958/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 377 and 418 together.

The specification which the contractor operating the test will have to meet provides for the delivery of a user friendly computerised theory testing system and requires that candidates with special needs be provided for. This includes the provision of reading assistance and voice-over audio, with an extended time slot for the test. The test will be based on a question bank, which has been developed, inter alia, in consultation with the Association for Children and Adults with Learning Difficulties and the National Adult Literacy Agency, and which will be available to candidates in a number of formats so that they can prepare in advance for undergoing the test.
