Vol. 535 No. 1

Written Answers - Social Welfare Appeals.

Michael Ring

Question:

441 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs when an appeal by a person (details supplied) in County Mayo in relation to an application for a carer's allowance will be finalised. [11334/01]

The person concerned applied for a carer's allowance on 22 August 2000. The principal conditions for receipt of the allowance are that full-time care and attention is required and being provided and that the means test which applies is satisfied. This application was refused as the full-time care and attention condition was not satisfied. She appealed the decision and, following an oral hearing, the appeals officer disallowed the appeal. She was notified of the outcome of her appeal on 4 April 2001. Under social welfare legislation, decisions on claims must be made by deciding officers and appeals officers. These officers are statutorily appointed and I have no role in making such decisions.
