Vol. 535 No. 1

Written Answers - Child Care Services.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

530 Ms Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the various child care groups which have received grants under the equal opportunity scheme in the past two to three years in the Dublin south east area; the number of children each group looks after or plans to look after; if each grant was a capital grant or for staffing; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11808/01]

Under my Department's equal opportunities child care programme for 1998-99, I approved funding totalling almost £400,000 to five child care groups in south east Dublin. Details of funding under this programme are listed in Table 1 hereunder.

The total amount committed by my Department so far under the equal opportunities childcare programme in the National Development Plan, 2000-2006 to seven child care providers or child care groups in south east Dublin is almost £1.24 million. Over 98 new child care places will be created and the continuance of over 170 existing places in south east Dublin will be assured as a result of this funding committed. This funding will also lead to improvements in quality and, in some cases, allow child care providers extend their opening hours. Details of these child care providers or child care groups are outlined in Table 2 hereunder.

In total therefore the funding in the past two to three years as requested by the Deputy is almost £1.64 million to nine child care groups in south east Dublin.

Question:

531 Ms Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the position regarding the establishment of the county child care committees in each county; the number of times they have met in each case; and the budget allocated to each county child care committee. [11809/01]

As the Deputy is aware, the Government's national child care policy has assigned county-city child care committees as the key local component in the development of a co-ordinated approach to quality child care. The county-city child care committees are charged with the responsibility for the effective inclusion of child care needs within the county-city development plans being drawn up by the county and city development boards. The county-city child care committees will work closely with the county development boards. Each committee will develop a county-city child care plan, 2001 to 2006, which will cover the direction set out by each committee based on a shared vision and analysis of the needs within each city-county area.

The structure of each committee is broadly based and representative of the key stakeholders in each area and is balanced to include representatives from the statutory sector, the social partners, local development-partnership groups, national voluntary child care organisations, parents and child care providers.

A core budget of up to £50,000 is available, from my Department, to each county-city child care committee towards the administration and co-ordination costs of each committee.

I have outlined, for the information of the Deputy, the up to date position on each county-city child care committee in the following table. The Deputy will understand that the work of the county committees has been delayed in some counties arising from the cancellation of meetings due to the foot and mouth crisis.
