Vol. 535 No. 1

Written Answers - Judicial Appointments.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

552 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the reason for the delay in appointing a judge to the new District Remand Court in Cloverhill Prison in view of the huge demands on Garda resources in escorting prisoners to outside courts; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12222/01]

The allocation and distribution of business in the Dublin Metropolitan District Court, including the allocation of judges to its various venues, is a matter for the President of the District Court. However, I am informed by the Courts Service that the President of the District Court has now assigned a judge to Cloverhill Courthouse and sittings will commence on 2 May 2001. The District Court will sit three times each week at Cloverhill, on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
