Vol. 535 No. 1

Written Answers - Teaching Qualifications.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

597 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education and Science if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 304 of 10 April 2001, he will list the teacher training qualifications which satisfy the Registration Council in regard to EPT status; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11409/01]

The particular degree qualification held by the person referred to in Parliamentary Question No. 304 of 10 April 2001 satisfied the requirement of the Registration Council in relation to holding a suitable degree or equivalent qualification for the purposes of teaching computer studies.

If the person in question attains one of the following teacher training qualifications, which are recognised by the Registration Council for the purposes of teaching at second level, this will satisfy the qualification requirements for appointment to an incremental teaching position in a sec ondary school. They are: The Higher Diploma in Education, as available at the four constituent universities of the National University of Ireland as well as the University of Dublin; the post-graduate certificate in education from the University of Ulster, subject to the demonstration of a satisfactory knowledge of the history and structure of the Irish education system; and the post-graduate certificate in education from Edge Hill College, awarded by the University of Lancaster, England, subject to the demonstration of a satisfactory knowledge of the history and structure of the Irish education system.
