Vol. 535 No. 1

Written Answers - Language Classes.

Question:

602 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Education and Science the supports which are provided for agencies providing English classes on a voluntary basis to refugees and asylum seekers. [11414/01]

A distinction is made between a provision for refugees and one for asylum seekers. In the case of refugees, English language support is provided and this is organised by the refugee language support unit which is funded by my Department and located at 83 Waterloo Lane, Dublin 4. This unit will either deliver English language support directly to the refugees or will arrange placement for the refugees in one of the English language schools which has been contracted to provide this service.

In the case of asylum seekers, support is given through the provision of teaching materials and by way of training for the volunteer teachers in new methodologies. This support is given on request by the refugee language support unit.
