Vol. 535 No. 1

Written Answers - National Drugs Strategy.

Pat Rabbitte

Question:

97 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation when the review of the operation of the national drugs strategy will be published, especially in view of his statement on 6 March 2001 that publication was likely before the end of that month; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11992/01]

As the Deputy will be aware, last year I initiated a comprehensive review of the national drugs strategy. The review was managed by a review group comprising senior officials from key Departments and the national drugs strategy team. Independent consultants were commissioned to assist with the review process, which included a extensive nation-wide public consultation process.

The overall objective of the review was to identify any gaps or deficiencies in existing strategy, to develop new strategies, and if necessary, new arrangements through which to deliver them. The review group have completed their work and its final report was recently presented to Government. It will be launched to the public on 10 May 2001 and will set out a policy framework through which those involved in addressing the drug problem can work for the next number of years.
