Vol. 535 No. 1

Written Answers - Special Educational Needs.

Michael Ring

Question:

641 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will provide funding to have an educational assessment carried out on a person (details supplied) in County Mayo. [11815/01]

The National Educational Psychological Service (NEPS) has begun the process of expanding its service until all schools have access to it. This process involves the recruitment and induction of over 130 psychologists, which is necessarily time consuming and will take place over a number of years. The NEPS service to primary schools in the Westport area will be available as soon as another psychologist is appointed to the team serving County Mayo.

My Department is currently developing a series of proposals aimed at meeting the needs in cases where psychological assessments are urgently needed.
