Stage 3, developed sketch scheme, of my Department's design team procedures was approved by the building unit of my Department for the proposed extra science laboratories and other facilities at the school to which the Deputy refers in January 2000.

The building unit is now awaiting the stage 4-5 submission, detail design and bill of quantities, of my Department's design team procedures from the school authority.

Ahern asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will give an update on refurbishment and extension plans for the Holy Spirit national school, Ballymun, Dublin 9; if he will outline the position with each project and say where the stage refurbishment plans are at for the central area; when work will commence; the plans there are for the refurbishment of the school hall; the plans there are for a new extension; the number of classrooms involved; when work will commence; if prefabs will be provided for September 2001; and the plans he has to allow new classes to operate. [12492/01]

Architectural planning for an extension and refurbishment works to the central block at Holy Spirit national schools, Ballymun, Dublin 11, is well under way.

However, the rate of progress to construction depends on factors such as the complexity and size of the project, the time required to undertake architectural planning, the volume of other projects being dealt with by the design team and my Department's building unit, the period of time required for the granting of planning permission and obtaining a fire certificate, the availability of funding, the outcome of the tender competition and the procurement, where relevant, of bonds, insurance and tax clearance by prospective contractors.

The Deputy will appreciate, therefore, that it is not possible at this point to give any indication when construction will commence. However, the school authorities will be kept informed of developments.

I have arranged for officials of my Department to make contact with the school authorities to discuss the requirement for the provision of temporary accommodation at the school.
