Vol. 535 No. 3

Written Answers - Subtitling for the Deaf.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

141 Ms Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands the progress being made in having subtitling for the deaf available on television; and if she will report on her discussions with the Independent Radio and Television Commission on this matter. [12642/01]

I refer the Deputy to the reply to Question No. 486 of 1 May 2001. As mentioned in that reply, during the course of the debate on the Broadcasting Bill, I undertook in the Dáil and the Seanad to make known to the Independent Radio and Television Commission the strength of feeling and the sense of urgency expressed in relation to this matter. I wrote to the Independent Radio and Television Commission outlining the strong views of the Oireachtas and I received a response on 11 April. I have arranged to have a copy of the response from the Independent Radio and Television Commission forwarded to the members of both Houses of the Oireachtas.
