Vol. 535 No. 5

Written Answers - National Roads Authority.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

173 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the proposals he has to give powers to the National Roads Authority to override development plans of local authorities; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13093/01]

In accordance with the Roads Act, 1993 it is a matter for the National Roads Authority – NRA – within the NDP framework to promote the detailed programming of the work required by the plan and to manage, in co-operation with local authorities, and the private sector in the context of the public private partnerships, the planning, design and implementation of individual road development projects. The powers available to NRA for this purpose have been conferred by the Roads Act, 1993, and subsequent amendments. I have no proposal at present to add to these powers.
