Vol. 535 No. 5

Written Answers - Library Projects.

David Stanton

Question:

175 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if his attention has been drawn to the need to provide a new library in Youghal, County Cork; the estimated costs in this regard; his plans in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13105/01]

The development of the public library service is, in the first instance, a matter for library authorities. I have recently announced a new tranche of library projects which will attract grant aid with a total value of over £25 million. These projects were approved for funding on the basis of prioritised lists of library projects submitted to my Department by each library authority. In the case of Cork County Council I have approved stage 1 and stage 2 proposals for a branch library in Midleton and funding for the provision of six mobile library vehicles. The Youghal project was included in the list submitted by the library authority but with a lower level of priority and is not, therefore, included in this tranche of approvals.
