Vol. 535 No. 5

Written Answers - Diplomatic Representation.

Austin Deasy

Question:

87 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs his medium term strategy in opening additional embassies and consulates; the way in which these numbers compare with the present situation; and the countries in which he intends to open new embassies in the next two or three years. [12850/01]

I am keeping under continuous review the need for establishing further Irish embassies abroad. I am in favour of a targeted and incremental increase in the number of our diplomatic missions as resources permit. My priorities include the EU applicants and Latin America.

I would hope, with the agreement of the Government, to open Missions in the EU applicant countries and in Latin America on a phased basis over the next few years.
