The cultural allocation for the Department of Foreign Affairs for the year 2000 was £810,000 and for the year 2001 it is £980,000.
The cultural allocation is used to promote Ireland abroad through the medium of culture. This is done through the funding of events abroad with an Irish cultural connection, donations of Irish books, music and other cultural products to foreign bodies and institutions, the organisation of events to take place in conjunction with and give added value to State and official visits and the implementation of our cultural agreements with other countries.
Individuals and organisations make applications to the Department for funding of events abroad with an Irish cultural connection. The cultural relations committee reviews these applications and makes recommendations on whether grants should be given to the applicants.
In 2000 the cultural relations committee made recommendations for grants to the sum of £471,090.51. This year I expect that the committee will make recommendations for grants to the sum of around £500,000.
I will provide the Deputy separately with details of the grants recommended by the committee in 2000 and 2001 to date.
