Vol. 535 No. 5

Written Answers - Internet Access.

Richard Bruton

Question:

133 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if her attention has been drawn to the withdrawal of the flat rate unlimited usage by some Internet providers; if she has approved this change; the impact this will have on the competitiveness of Internet access compared to the US and EU; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [13098/01]

I have no function in relation to the offering or pricing of Internet access options by service providers. This is a commercial decision for the companies involved. I am naturally disappointed at any development that might impact on the cost of Internet access.

The introduction of flat rate charges for dial-up Internet access has not been without its difficulties. To some extent this is mirroring the experience in other countries. The Office of the Director of Telecommunications Regulation has been engaged in an examination of these issues. Recently the director, following a public consultation, introduced new access codes and number ranges for Internet access. These dedicated Internet access codes should open the way for the development of new and innovative pricing models for Internet access and stimulate the already strong growth in Internet usage in Ireland. I encourage the operators to make use of this opportunity and look forward to the development of more choice and increased value for the consumer.
