Vol. 536 No. 1

Written Answers - Motor Vehicle Registration.

Question:

136 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will ensure that a person (details supplied) in Dublin 8 is allowed to register the car he purchased as a taxi. [13476/01]

On 25 April 2001 notification of a change of ownership for the vehicle in question was received from the garage disposing of the vehicle by my Department's vehicle registration unit located in Shannon, County Clare. The following day, a vehicle licensing certificate – VLC – in the new owner's name was issued by the vehicle registration unit. Taxi licences in respect of the Dublin taximeter area are granted by Dublin Corporation. A conditional offer for the grant of a taxi licence may be made by the corporation upon application. The taxi licence would be granted following presentation of relevant documentation required by the corporation which includes vehicle certification by national car testing service – NCTS – or the Garda, evidence that use of the vehicle as a taxi is covered by insurance and payment of the taxi licence fee of £5,000. It would appear that the next step for the person concerned is to make an application to the corporation for the taxi licence.
