Vol. 536 No. 1

Written Answers - Car Parking Facilities.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

29 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if she has received proposals to impose car park charges on customers using the Arrow and DART public transport systems and if she will make a statement on the matter. [13177/01]

I have not received any proposals from CIE or Iarnród Éireann to impose car parking charges at Arrow or DART stations. I have been informed by CIE that it views adequate car parking facilities at public transport amenities as a key element of the overall strategy to encourage motorists to use public transport. The company recognizes that such parking facilities must be adequate in number, secure and customer friendly.

CIE has advised me that it has recently been examining possible options to improve car parking facilities at commuter railway stations. These improvements relate to increasing supply, improving facilities at existing car parks, improved security and improved general management. I have been informed by CIE that no decisions in relation to charging rail passengers for parking at rail stations have been taken and no proposals have been submitted to the Boards of Iarnród Éireann or CIE.
