Question:

96 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Health and Children the number of long-stay public geriatric beds in each of the health board regions; his views on whether this number should be increased; the plans he has in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13369/01]

The information requested by the Deputy is not readily available in my Department. Accordingly, I have asked the chief executive officer of each health board and the Eastern Regional Health Authority to furnish my Department with the information as a matter of urgency. I will forward the details to the Deputy at the earliest opportunity.

Under the National Development Plan 2001-2006, additional funding of approximately £200 million has been provided for capital developments for services for older people. This will allow for the provision of approximately 20 new community nursing units and 20 day care centres and for the expansion and refurbishment of some existing facilities.
